Press Release - Attack of the Worms

Pennine Vets has launched its Attack of the Worms campaign to highlight the change in advice on worming your cat or dog. Previous advice from the BSAVA (British Small Animal Veterinary Association) was that all animals were wormed every 3 months to protect primarily against Toxocara roundworms. This advice has now changed to reflect the relative risk that different pets come across.

The highest risk pets are those that live with families with children. Children are particulrly at risk from the effects of worms, which can include blindness. These animals should be treated against worms every 4 weeks to ensure that the worms don't get a chance to reproduce. The lowest risk groups are animals that stay inside or just stay go out into the owners yard or garden and have no access to children. These animals should be wormed twice yearly as a precaution.

So what is Pennine Vets doing to promote Attack of the Worms?

We have produced three 8 feet long models of worms and suspended them from the ceiling in our waiting room. Made by Alex Frazer, the son of our receptionist, these models provide a striking display in the surgery. We have also produced a website attackoftheworms.penninevets.co.uk to spread our message. On the website is our 50 second promo video, in the style of a 1950's B movie trailer, telling the story of the battle between a dog, cat and the giant worms. This is very tongue in cheek but is designed to be a talking point. Pennine Vets is aiming to increase awareness of the problems caused by worms and the simplicity of treatment.

Ian Mostyn, vet & partner at Pennine Vets says "Worms are an everyday problem that all responsible dog & cat owners should be concerned about. It is very easy to clean up after your pet and we can dispense easy to use wormers for our patients. Preventing an Attack of the Worms is easy."

For further information, please contact Ian Mostyn at Pennine Vets, Tottington on 01204 886655. A selection of photos of our worms are available on this page and the video can be viewed by following the link below.
